Why Is Post-Repair Calibration So Important?
The customer’s safety is at stake! Imagine this scenario: a customer picks up their vehicle from a collision or glass repair facility satisfied with the external repairs. On the drive home, the Blind Spot Monitor doesn’t perform as the OEM intended or as the vehicle owner had anticipated, and the driver fails to see a car tucked away in their blind spot. In a worst-case scenario, they strike a vehicle, resulting in another accident.
The same scenario could happen for the Forward Collision Warning System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert Systems, Automatic Emergency Braking and other advanced driver-assist systems that aren’t calibrated properly during the collision repair process.
What About Post-Repair?
After the initial accident, the driver’s car was repaired. All damaged components were replaced or reconditioned and all warning indicators lights were addressed. However, it isn’t simply a matter of repairs, there are also systems that need to be calibrated. Understanding which systems require post-repair calibration is key. A repair facility needs the right tools, technology, and business partners to properly repair complex vehicle electronic systems.
Why Perform Calibration?
Post-repair ADAS calibration is so critical because these systems protect the passengers inside the vehicle. Drivers have become reliant on front cameras, rear cameras, blind spot monitors and lane-assist technology to help them navigate the roadways. When a driver gets behind the wheel, they’re placing their trust in the repairs done to their vehicle.
Ultimately, it’s all about safety. Calibrating the ADAS is the key to a properly and safely functioning vehicle. The OEMs emphasize which steps must be taken when calibration is required. There are many labor-intensive steps that must be followed to properly calibrate a vehicle.
Insurance companies are requiring vehicles with ADAS to be re-calibrated after repairs.
